By winning the T20 World Cup in Barbados, Team India ended the ICC trophy drought after 11 years under the captaincy of Rohit Sharma. It has been a week since the victory and now this team has embarked on a new journey. Along with the final match of the T20 World Cup, three veterans of the Indian team Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli and Ravindra Jadeja announced their retirement. With this, the position of number 3 and left arm all-rounder along with the team captain became vacant. Now on the Zimbabwe tour, BCCI is trying to find their replacement. In this, the biggest struggle is regarding the captaincy in T20 International.
Shubman Gill has already proved his batting prowess. He has batted brilliantly in T20 and ODI formats so far and has been a part of the Indian team continuously. However, his bat was silent for some time, due to which he did not even get a place in the T20 World Cup team. Now he has a chance to show his strength once again. He is also going to captain Team India for the first time on this tour. If he does good captaincy along with good batting, then he can be a big contender in T20 International.
Along with success in the five-match series, he can also harm Hardik Pandya, who is already the biggest contender for captaincy. The biggest reason for this is Pandya's injury. Pandya is often out due to his injury. In such a situation, BCCI needs a strong alternative to Rohit Sharma. Gill fits all the parameters of BCCI from fitness to batting. Apart from this, he has become a big face of Indian cricket at a young age.
Shubman Gill is going to captain Team India for the first time in international matches. Earlier, he took over the captaincy of Gujarat Giants in IPL 2024 after the departure of team captain Hardik Pandya. This season was not good for him in terms of captaincy. His team's performance was not good and could win only 5 matches, due to which he could not qualify for the playoffs. Earlier he was the vice-captain of Team India in Under-19. At the same time, in 2019, he was made the captain of the Dilip Trophy India Blue team in domestic cricket. He has also captained the India C team in the Deodhar Trophy.
Before the series against Zimbabwe begins, Shubman Gill has expressed his desire to replace Rohit Sharma. He said during the press conference that Rohit Sharma used to open. Virat Kohli also opened in the T20 World Cup. Now he wants to open for the Indian team in T20. However, according to Gill, it is difficult to match the level of both the players, but he is ready to overcome these challenges without any pressure.
