Nothing had changed for India even in 4 years. Its condition in the 1992 Barcelona Olympics was the same as in the 1988 Seoul Olympics. But, in the meantime, the world had seen many big changes. Apartheid had ended in South Africa. West and East Germany had become one after the fall of the Berlin Wall. Similarly, North and South Yemen had also become one. The Soviet Union had been divided into 15 countries. After seeing so many changes in the world, 169 countries of the world participated in the Olympic Games held in Barcelona, of which India was also one.
India entered the 1992 Olympic Games with a new hope and intention to change its fate, but it did not happen. Despite the increase in the number of athletes, India was seen yearning for a medal in Barcelona just like the 1988 Seoul Olympics. A total of 52 athletes from India participated in the 1992 Olympics, of which 46 were men and 6 were women.
Many new sports were organised at the Barcelona Olympics, of which badminton and women's judo were important. Apart from this, baseball was also included in the medal sports. While basketball was opened to professional players, it became a great success for America. America sent a team consisting of superstar players like Michael Jordan and Larry Bird to participate in this basketball event and won the gold medal.
Germany won the gold medal in men's hockey at the Barcelona Olympics. One of the players in the German team was Andreas Keller, who was the third generation of his family to win a medal in this sport. Before him, his father Karsten had won the gold medal in hockey at the Olympics in 1972. The first person from the family to win a medal in hockey was his grandfather Erwin in 1936.
The Barcelona Olympics is also remembered for the interesting incident that happened in the men's rowing final, where the gold medal was decided by a difference of just 30 centimetres. This astonishing victory was registered by Canada against Romania.
In the Barcelona Olympics, the Unified Team won the most medals, 112, with 45 gold. USA was second with 108 medals, including 37 gold. Germany, China and Cuba also managed to make it to the top 5. The last Olympics' host, South Korea, won 29 medals, including 12 gold. The top 10 teams together shared 524 medals, including 196 gold.
