Francisco Lazaro of Portugal was the first athlete to die during the Olympics. Francisco Lazaro was a Portuguese Olympic marathon runner and was also the first flag bearer for Portugal at the 1912 Stockholm Olympics. Like all Olympic athletes of his time, Francisco Lazaro was not a full-time athlete, he worked as a carpenter in an automobile factory in Lisbon.

Before the 1912 Olympics, he had won three national marathon championships in Portugal. But during the Olympic marathon, he fell at the 30 kilometer mark, after which he died. When he fell, his body temperature was 41 °C. Later investigations revealed that Lazaro had covered a large part of his body with a hard fatty tissue (Suet) to avoid sunlight and maintain speed and lightness while running, which caused electrolyte imbalance in his body fluids. Let us tell you, he had also said before the marathon that either I will win or I will die.
