After the excitement of the T20 World Cup 2024 in the US and West Indies, the ICC has now made a big announcement. This announcement is about the number of teams in the upcoming World Cup. A total of 20 teams participated in this World Cup held in June. For the first time in the history of the Men's T20 World Cup, so many teams were a part of the tournament. In view of this, the ICC has now decided to increase the scope of the Women's T20 World Cup and in the upcoming tournament it will increase to 16. The ICC has taken this decision in view of the increasing popularity of T20 cricket and the improvement in the performance of teams from new countries.
The ICC's annual conference was held on Saturday and Sunday in Sri Lanka's capital Colombo, in which apart from the board meeting, the Annual General Meeting (AGM) was also held. Officials of all ICC member boards were present in this meeting and during this some important decisions were taken, in which increasing the number of teams in the Women's T20 World Cup was the most important. The ICC took this decision as part of its campaign to promote equality in men's and women's cricket.
In a press release issued by the International Council, it was told that the number of teams participating in the tournament will be gradually increased. The tournament is to be held in Bangladesh in October this year, which will be played with 10 teams, which has been going on since 2016. After this, this number will increase to 12 in the tournament to be held in 2026 and then it will be increased to 16 by 2030. Overall, more and more countries are going to get a chance to participate in the World Cup in the coming years.
Despite all the speculations, there was no discussion on the Champions Trophy in this meeting. The Champions Trophy is to be held in Pakistan next year, for which 6 teams have agreed to go to Pakistan but the situation is not clear regarding Team India's visit. The Indian government did not allow Team India to go to Pakistan for the Asia Cup last year as well and the same situation seems likely to remain this time as well. In such a situation, there is a possibility of the tournament being played in hybrid mode but at present there was no discussion on this issue in the ICC meeting. In this, only the budget of the tournament was passed.
