Mohammed Shami has talked about MS Dhoni's thought process on when a player should call it time and take retirement. Shami shared an anecdote about Dhoni when asked about his own retirement from cricket, in a recent YouTube podcast.
Mohammed Shami, who will turn 34 in September, has been out of action even since featuring in the ODI World Cup 2023 final against Australia. He underwent a surgery to repair his Achilles tendon in February this year, and is aiming to make a comeback in the home Test series against Bangladesh in September. During his chat with host Shubhankar Mishra, Shami was also asked if Dhoni should continue playing in the IPL. Replying to the question, the pacer revealed his chat with Dhoni on the ideal time to bid adieu to the game. Shami said that Dhoni once suggested that a player should retire either when he is bored with the game or when there is a chance of him being axed by the selectors permanently. "You [media] guys have been putting a question mark on his future the man himself says, 'Dekha Jayega' [let's see]," Shami said on Mishra's podcast 'Unplugged'. "I had this conversation with Mahi bhai, asking 'When should a player retire?". He said, 'First when you yourself get bored and second, Jab lage ki laat padne wali hai (when you realise that you would be kicked out of the team). "But the first and foremost thing is that when you stop enjoying the game, it's a sign that your time has come. Better you choose the best moment to retire. Because your body starts intimating you if you can't sustain a particular format. That's when a player should call it time," he added. MS Dhoni, who stepped down from captaincy but played as a wicketkeeper-batter for CSK in IPL 2024, is yet to take any decision on his retirement. The former India captain, who announced his international retirement in 2020, recently celebrated his 43rd birthday.
