The Indian hockey team, which brought joy to the country by winning a historic bronze medal in the Tokyo Olympics, has also raised the hopes of a medal in the Paris Olympics. Coach Craig Fulton and captain Harmanpreet Singh's team, which has been performing consistently well in the pool stage, created a sensation by defeating Australia by achieving the best result till date. In its last match of the pool stage, the Indian team defeated Tokyo Olympics silver medalist Australia 3-2 in a thrilling match. With this, India created history by defeating Australia in the Olympics after 52 years.

In these Olympics, Captain Harmanpreet Singh, along with handling his defense duty, kept scoring goals from penalty corners and penalty strokes to ensure victory for the team. He did the same feat against the Australian team, which had given a lot of pain to Team India in the Olympics, World Cup and Commonwealth Games in the past several years. Finally, for the first time since 1972, Team India avenged its many defeats from Australia in the Olympics.

After losing 1-2 in a tough match against Belgium a day earlier, Team India had a tough challenge from Australia in their last match of the group stage. Australia was considered the contender for victory in this match but Team India started playing on the front foot from the first quarter itself and scored two goals within two minutes to take a 2-0 lead. This surprised everyone. Abhishek scored a field goal for the team in the 12th minute and then in the very next minute captain Harmanpreet converted a penalty corner into a goal.
