It was expected that India would secure some medals on Super Sunday of Paris Olympics because just one win each in boxing and badminton would have done the job. But when the world's number 1 or number 2 players are in front, this task is not so easy. Something similar happened with the Indian players as well. First, in boxing, Lovlina Borgohain was easily defeated 4-1 by the number one ranked boxer of her category in the quarter-finals, then in badminton, young shuttler Lakshya Sen had to face defeat from defending Olympic champion Viktor Axelsen in his semi-final. Lakshya's defeat was more heartbreaking, because he looked in a position to win but still lost. But Lakshya's 'lakshya' has not been accomplished yet because he is still in a position to win the bronze medal.
There were expectations of Lakshya winning this match on Sunday, 4th August. These were just expectations, but less certainty because the toughest challenge in front was Victor Axelsen, against whom Lakshya had won only 1 match out of the last 8. Still, Lakshya performed well against this superstar shuttler of Denmark and was leading 15-9 in the first game. At one point, he was even leading 20-18 and needed just 1 point, but Victor did not let this happen and won the first game 22-20.
Even after this, Lakshya made a great start in the second game and took a straight 7-0 lead. Lakshya's performance reached only till here and after this the Olympic champion showed his prowess and won the match along with the second game 21-14. If Lakshya had won this match, he would have become the first male shuttler from India to enter the final. Well, this could not happen but Lakshya showed so much strength that Victor Axelsen had to admit that this was his toughest match in this Olympics.
Not only this, Victor also predicted that Lakshya will be a contender to win the gold medal in the Olympics to be held after 4 years. Now we will have to wait to see whether Lakshya will be able to do this after 4 years or not, but the Indian player still has a goal in front of him. That is the Olympic medal and for this he will enter the court on Monday 5th August, where he will face Lee Zii Jia of Malaysia. With a win in this match, Lakshya can win the bronze medal and will become the first male shuttler from India to do so. That means Lakshya still has a chance to not return empty handed.
