After the first ODI match against Sri Lanka ended in a tie, Team India played the second match on Sunday, August 4. Once again the match was at the R Premadasa Stadium in Colombo and once again Sri Lanka decided to bat first. Again its top order failed and this time too the lower order handled the innings and took the score to a match-worthy score. Although the Indian spinners dominated but before the end of the innings, Shreyas Iyer surprised everyone with his amazing fielding.
All this happened in the last over of Sri Lanka's innings. Arshdeep Singh was bowling and Kamindu Mendis played the fifth ball of his over high in the air. Iyer tried to catch the ball by running from deep midwicket but he was still far from the ball and hence he did not dive. In such a situation, the Sri Lankan batsman ran for 2 runs but this is where he made a mistake.

Although Iyer could not catch the ball, he caught it after it bounced once and seeing Mendis running for the second run, he threw the ball from about 30 meters away, aiming at the stumps. His throw was so fast and accurate that Mendis was not even near the crease and the ball broke the stumps. Seeing this, captain Rohit Sharma also started laughing because he too could not believe that Iyer had hit the target from such a distance.
As far as the match is concerned, Kamindu Mendis had done his job by then. He was given a life by Shivam Dubey by dropping his catch on the score of 11 runs and then he returned to the pavilion after scoring 40 runs. During this, he along with Dunith Vellalage made a great partnership of 72 runs for the seventh wicket and took the team, which had lost 6 wickets for 136 runs, to a score of 240 runs. Apart from Mendis, Vellalage scored 39 runs quickly. Once again, Washington Sundar bowled well for Team India and took the maximum of 3 wickets by spending only 30 runs in his 10 overs.
