Fortune can change anytime. When it comes to sports, it is often seen that a player suddenly turns from hero to villain or from villain to hero. Something similar has happened with that 34-year-old cricketer, who was once dropped due to discipline and was suddenly included in the team to fill the place of another player. That player had to crave for every wicket and now the same player has become the reason for the destruction of an entire team. This player is Sri Lankan spinner Jeffrey Vandersay, who trapped Team India in his spin web in the second ODI in such a way that no batsman could get out of it.
The second match of the ODI series between India and Sri Lanka was played in Colombo on Sunday, August 4. A day before this match, Sri Lankan team's star spinner Wanindu Hasaranga was ruled out of the series due to a hamstring injury. In such a situation, the Sri Lankan team called Vandersay back to the team. 34-year-old Vandersay had earlier played his last ODI in January 2024, while his only ODI against India came in Thiruvananthapuram in January last year, where he conceded 59 runs in 7 overs and could not take any wicket.
Vandersay had also played 2 T20 matches against India but here too he never got any wicket. In such a situation, no one would have expected this spinner to have any kind of impact against Team India. Even Vandersay himself would not have thought that after making his ODI debut 9 years ago and playing his 23rd ODI match overall, he would be able to do something like this but sometimes luck is very kind and the same happened with him.
Vandersay first trapped Rohit Sharma in his spin, who was thrashing every bowler before that and then one by one he took the wickets of legends like Shubman Gill, Shivam Dubey, Virat Kohli, Shreyas Iyer and KL Rahul. The situation was such that all the first 6 wickets of Team India were taken by Vandersay and he did this feat in just 6.1 overs. In his 10 overs, he spent a total of 33 runs and took these 6 wickets.
Before this match, Vandersay had taken 4 wickets in an innings only once in 22 matches but had never been able to reach 5 wickets. This time he ended this wait as well. This is also special for Vandersay because a few years ago his career seemed to be in danger when he was accused of bad behavior. He got a place in the team on the West Indies tour in 2018 but did not get a chance in any match. Then before the last Test match, he was sent back to Sri Lanka due to his bad behavior. A few months later in 2018, he was again sent back home from the tournament due to a similar mistake.
