Vinesh Phogat has made it to the final of Paris Olympics 2024. Vinesh won the 50 kg weight category semi-final 5-0 to make it to the final and with this confirmed the medal. In this way, Vinesh also became the first female wrestler of the country to reach the final of wrestling in the Olympics. Vinesh defeated Cuban wrestler Guzman Lopez 5-0 in the semi-finals. The first period of this bout was very close, in which no one was completely dominant. However, during this time Vinesh had gained a 1-0 lead. Then at the beginning of the second period, Vinesh gained a lead of 2-2 points continuously and gained a lead of 5-0. The Cuban wrestler could not make a comeback and Vinesh won the bout.
29-year-old Vinesh, who is participating in her third Olympics, started her campaign on Tuesday, 6 August and her start was explosive. Vinesh created a stir by defeating current Olympic and 4-time world champion Yui Susaki of Japan in her very first match. No one had expected this victory of Vinesh because 25-year-old Susaki had not lost any match in her 82-match international career. This was her first defeat. After this, Vinesh defeated Oksana Livach of Ukraine 7-5 in the quarter-finals.
After this result, whether Vinesh will get gold or silver medal, it will be decided on Wednesday night, 7 August. Vinesh Phogat made her debut in the Rio de Janeiro Olympics in 2016 but she had to drop out due to injury in the very first match. After this, she was defeated before the semi-finals in the Tokyo Olympics. Now, by doing wonders in Paris, she became the first Indian female wrestler to reach the Olympic semi-finals.
With this success of Vinesh, India's medal has been confirmed and with this the dominance of wrestlers in the Olympics continues. This is the 7th medal India has got in wrestling in these 5 Olympics. Before him, Sushil Kumar in 2008 (bronze) and 2012 (silver), Yogeshwar Dutt (bronze) in 2012, Sakshi Malik (bronze) in 2016, Bajrang Punia (bronze) in 2020 and Ravi Dahiya (silver) in 2020 have written their names in this list by winning medals in wrestling for India.
