Mohammed Shami: After the ODI series against Sri Lanka is over, now the next assignment of the Indian team is the Test series against Bangladesh. A 2-match Test series will be played between the two countries from September 19. With this series, Team India's veteran fast bowler Mohammed Shami can also make a comeback in international cricket. He has been away from the playing field since the ODI World Cup 2023. However, now a big update is coming out regarding his return.
Before the start of the series against Sri Lanka, Indian selection committee chairman Ajit Agarkar had said that the target has been set to bring Mohammed Shami back into the national team for the Test series against Bangladesh. He is currently undergoing rehabilitation at the National Cricket Academy. He may possibly be seen playing in the upcoming Duleep Trophy as well.
Media reports are claiming that Shami might play for East Zone in the upcoming season of the Duleep Trophy, starting from September 5.
ESPN Cricinfo has claimed in its report that Mohammed Shami will probably have to play at least one match in domestic cricket to prove himself fit for international cricket. However, a final decision on this is yet to be taken.
Let us tell you that Shami has been suffering from ankle injury since the World Cup 2023, for which he has also undergone surgery. The right-arm fast bowler has started bowling in the nets only since last month.
33-year-old Mohammed Shami is valuable for India. He has taken 229 wickets in 64 Test matches for Team India. Apart from this, his statistics in white ball cricket are also tremendous. Shami has taken 195 wickets in 101 ODI matches at an average of 23.68 and economy of 5.56, while he has taken 24 wickets in 23 T20 Internationals.
