Due to strict weight rules in wrestling, Indian wrestler Vinesh Phogat missed out on creating history. She had a chance to win the first gold medal for India in this sport. Even if she lost in the final match, she would have got at least a silver medal. However, due to being only 100 grams overweight, Vinesh was disqualified and also deprived of the medal. No extra time was given to lose weight. Due to this weight rule, Indian wrestler Aman Sehrawat has now been seen getting the benefit and he has managed to win bronze.

How did Aman benefit from the weight rule?

Every morning before the wrestling match, the wrestlers' weight is checked. For this, they have to reach at the given time. If they reach more than this time, they are disqualified. Vinesh reached on time but could not lose weight till then. In men's wrestling, Iran's Alireza Sarlak became the victim of this rule. He did not reach on time for the weigh-in and had to be out before the pre-quarterfinal match. Sarlak was a silver medalist wrestler of the World Championship and was considered a big contender for the medal. If he had moved ahead, Aman could have faced him in the bronze medal match.

At the same time, the weight maintenance rule also harmed Albanian wrestler Zelimkhan Abakarov, who was the world champion in 2022. Due to losing too much weight, he struggled in the quarter-finals and Aman Sehrawat defeated him 12-0. Whereas before this he had defeated Aman 10-0 in the World Championship. The weight maintenance rules weakened the opponents and Aman benefited from it. Due to this, some of them got eliminated on their own and some looked weak on the wrestling mat, which helped Aman win the bronze medal.

Youngest Indian to win a medal

After Vinesh Phogat was out, all eyes were on Aman Sehrawat. He was the last hope for a medal in wrestling and he did not disappoint. In his debut Olympics, Aman won the bronze medal in the men's 57 kg weight category. He defeated the wrestler from Puerto Rico 13-5 and gave India the sixth medal. With this, Aman also became the youngest Indian to win a medal in an individual event at the Olympics.
