Indian wrestler Vinesh Phogat made it to the finals of the Paris Olympics with a brilliant performance. This time she was expected to win the gold medal. However, before the final match, she was disqualified for being only 100 grams overweight. The International Olympic Committee (IOC) did not even give her extra time to lose weight. Due to this decision, Vinesh missed out on winning silver, let alone gold, after which she appealed for justice in the Court of Arbitration for Sports (CAS). The hearing of her case has been completed and the verdict has been announced by August 13. Before Vinesh, CAS has given justice to Romanian gymnast Ana Barbosu. This has also increased the hopes of the Indian wrestler.
In the floor event of women's artistic gymnastics at the Paris Olympics, Jordan Chiles of America won the bronze medal with 13.766 points. Romania's Ana Barbosu finished fourth with 13.700 points. Barbosu had appealed to CAS against giving points to Chiles wrongly. After the completion of the hearing in this case, CAS
Barbosu's challenge is upheld.
The court admitted that the Olympic judging panel had wrongly added points, causing Chiles to go from fifth to third place. After this decision, Chiles' points were deducted and she has gone back to 13.666. In this way, CAS did justice to Ana Barbosu and despite losing in the final, the International Gymnastics Federation (FIG) has now awarded the bronze medal to the Romanian gymnast.
Actually, Jordan Chiles found some irregularities on the floor during the performance. After this, he complained about the 'degree of difficulty' in front of the judging panel. The panel agreed with him and gave extra points. Later, Ana Barbosu opposed this. She believed that there is a deadline of 1 minute to complain. Chiles raised the issue of 'degree of difficulty' after the deadline was over, so he should not have been given points.
Vinesh Phogat has also filed a petition in CAS regarding disqualification. India's famous lawyer Harish Salve has presented her case. In this petition, she has demanded joint silver. If CAS accepts her demand, then silver can be expected. After the hearing, the Indian Olympic Association (IOA) has expressed hope of a decision in its favor. Let us tell you that the CAS decision on Vinesh's case is to come on August 13.
