51-year-old Rahul Dravid says that he was more saddened by the defeat in the Test series against South Africa than the defeat in the finals of the ODI World Cup and World Test Championship last year. In fact, in late 2021, India went on a tour of South Africa to play a 3-match Test series. This was Rahul Dravid's first overseas tour as head coach, while it was Virat Kohli's last Test series as captain. Here, despite winning the first Test, Team India had to face defeat 1 – 2 in the series.

Former Indian head coach Rahul Dravid ESPN Cricinfo said while talking with, “If you ask me what was my most difficult time, I would say the South Africa Test series held at the beginning of my career. We won the first Test match in Centurion in South Africa and then we had to play the second and third Test matches.”

“As you know we have never won a Test series in South Africa. It was a really big opportunity for us to win that series. Some of our senior players were not there. Rohit Sharma was not playing then due to injury. But we were very close to winning the series. So I would say that this was the most difficult time for me as the coach of the Indian team, because we missed out on winning despite being ahead in the series.”
