On Monday evening, the player announced it in a press conference at the Eden Gardens. After the event, MyKhel had a talk with the Indian player, where he opened up on IPL hopes and his main focus after his return.
Wriddhiman has been playing IPL regularly since its inception, but cleared that his focus is not on the IPL right now. The player confirmed that he has talks with the Gujarat Titans coach Asish Nehra for different reasons, but denied any talks regarding retention.
IPL is not my Focus: Wriddhiman Saha
"I talk with everyone. But the team selection for IPL is in December, hence I haven't thought about it. My responsibility is to play in the ground, team selection is not in my hands," Wriddhiman said to MyKhel.
"My sole focus is to play well for Bengal and perform for my state. I am thinking about Ranji Trophy first, no such emphasis on IPL at the moment," he added.
Bengal has been a breeding ground for talents, and a recent upsurge of pacers in the state has served the country as well. The likes of Mohammed Shami, Akash Deep, Mukesh Kumar have played for India, but no frontline batter from Bengal has donned the India shirt since Manoj Tiwary and Wriddhiman. When asked about that prospect, Wridhhiman cited Abhimanyu Easwaran's call-ups and spoke about the difficulty of getting into the Indian team.
"Being in the Indian team itself is a big thing. Yes, the bowlers are getting chances because some bowlers get rested, but the batters like Abhimanyu Easwaran, all-rounder such as Shahbaz Ahmed are getting into the team because of their performances, which is a positive for Bengal cricket," he added.
During the press conference, the Bengal player spoke about his passion for Bengal cricket and his motivation to win a Ranji trophy for his home state. When asked about retirement, the player confirmed that when he retires, he will retire from all formats of the game at once.
