The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is expected to classify Mahendra Singh Dhoni as an uncapped player when it announces the player regulations ahead of the 2025 Indian Premier League (IPL).
This is a stunning development that should make the management of the Chennai Super Kings very happy. Consequently, the BCCI will revert to its policy, which has been in effect since the first IPL season and placed players in the uncapped category if they had retired from international cricket for a minimum of five years. It means that retaining Dhoni, a legendary former India and CSK captain, will not cost too heavily to CSK-as per the last retention rules, an uncapped player could be retained for Rs 4 crores. CSK had retained Dhoni for Rs 12 crores in 2022. Asked on whether Dhoni would be treated as an uncapped player in the 2025 IPL auction, CSk CEO Kasi Viswanathan told TOI: 'I've no idea about it. We've not requested for it. They (the BCCI) have themselves told us that the 'uncapped player rule' may be kept, that's all. They (the BCCI) haven't announced anything as yet. The rules and regulations will be announced by the BCCI.' It seems that the CSK management advocated for the regulation at the IPL franchise owners' meeting with BCCI on July 31 in Mumbai last month. The last time Dhoni played for India was in the World Cup semifinal match at Old Trafford in Manchester against New Zealand in 2019. On August 15, 2020, he announced his retirement from international cricket. Ruturaj Gaikwad, the opening batsman for India, took over as captain of CSK from Dhoni prior to the start of the IPL-2024. Arriving to bat only in the final overs, the 43-year-old amassed 161 runs at an average of 53.66 and strike-rate of 220.54 in just 73 balls faced. TRENDING NOW Dhoni stated this month at an event in Hyderabad that he would wait to make the decision of whether or not to play in another IPL season until he saw the player regulations. There's plenty of time to do it. We need to watch what choices they make about player retention, etc. The ball is not in our court right now. 'I will answer a call once the rules and regulations are formalized, but it must be in the team's best interest,' Dhoni stated during a promotional event in Hyderabad.
