Team India's star fast bowler Jaspreet Bumrah has expressed his desire to become a captain on a few occasions. He believes that fast bowlers can also be good captains, but former Pakistani cricketer Basit Ali has given a strange statement on this issue. He has compared Bumrah to Babar Azam. Basit Ali said on his YouTube channel that Jaspreet Bumrah should not run after captaincy. Basit Ali advised that he should focus only on his bowling.
Basit Ali said, 'Bumrah also loves captaincy like Babar Azam. From my point of view, he should not run after captaincy. He is a top class bowler and he should focus on bowling only. Bumrah gave the example of Kapil Dev and Imran Khan but he became an all-rounder, that is why he became a good captain. He did not become a captain when he joined the team as a bowler. This is the only relationship between a bowler and an all-rounder.'
Basit Ali's statement that all-rounders prove to be good captains and not fast bowlers is very strange. Players like Wasim Akram, Shaun Pollock, Courtney Walsh, Bob Willis, Waqar Younis, Heath Streak have captained their respective teams despite being fast bowlers. Yes, it is true that Bumrah's fitness is a big hurdle in his becoming a captain. Bumrah is often given rest after a big series and as a captain he may not get much rest. However, Bumrah has all the qualities to become a captain. He is a great strategist and match winner. Bumrah has captained in one Test against England and he also captained the T20 series against Ireland in which Team India won.
