When former great batsman Sachin Tendulkar was at the last stage of his career, Virat Kohli's name was being discussed as his successor. He had already joined Team India and was slowly making his mark. After this, everyone knows what Kohli achieved in his career and in the true sense, he proved to be worthy of Sachin's place. Similarly, for the last few years, Shubman Gill's name is most taken as a batsman who will carry forward Virat Kohli's legacy. Gill has not fully come into form but his effect is also visible and he has started breaking some of Kohli's records, but before breaking Kohli's record with the bat, Gill had broken one of Virat's records in captaincy, that too at the age of just 20. On the occasion of Shubman Gill's birthday, let us tell you about this record.

Hit from Under-19 World Cup, entry in Team India

Born on 8 September 1999 in Fazilka, Punjab, Shubman Gill caught the attention of the cricket world when he played an important role in helping India win the 2018 Under-19 World Cup. Exactly 10 years before him, Virat Kohli was also a part of the Under-19 World Cup winning team. The only difference was that Kohli was the captain, while Gill was an important batsman of the team. Gill then scored a brilliant century against Pakistan in the semi-finals and was selected as the Player of the Tournament with the most runs in the tournament.

After this success of Gill, the managers of Indian cricket kept an eye on him and soon he also came to IPL, where Kolkata Knight Riders bought him with a huge bid of Rs 1.8 crore. A year later, in January 2019, Gill made his international debut in ODI cricket for Team India on the New Zealand tour. His debut was not very good and he could score only 9 runs. In the next ODI also, he could reach only 7 runs. After this, Gill returned to Team India directly on the Australia tour in December 2020, where he scored 33 runs in the ODI match and then made his Test debut in Melbourne.

Virat's record broken in captaincy

Between his ODI debut and return to Team India, Gill played a lot of domestic cricket and also participated in various tours with India-A. This was the time when Gill made a special record. Impressed by his strong performance in domestic cricket, the selectors appointed Gill as the captain of the India-C team in the 2019-20 Deodhar Trophy. Under Gill's captaincy, the team managed to reach the final but missed the title and India-B won the trophy. The team did lose but Gill made a special record. He became the youngest player to captain in the final of this tournament. Gill was only 20 years and 57 days old then and he broke Virat's record, who captained North Zone in the final of the 2009-10 season at the age of 21 years and 112 days.

Shubman Gill's career and records

Since then, Gill has been showing his prowess in international cricket. He holds the record for the highest score for India in T20 International. He scored 126 runs in 63 balls against New Zealand and broke Kohli's record of 122 runs. Not only this, at the age of 23, he scored a double century in ODI cricket against New Zealand and became the youngest batsman in the world to do so.

Not only this, just before his 25th birthday, Gill was also made the new vice-captain of Team India in ODI and T20 cricket, which indicates that he is being seen as the future captain. Gill has so far scored 1492 runs in 25 Test matches for Team India, which includes 4 centuries and 6 half-centuries. At the same time, he has scored 2328 runs in 47 ODI matches and has hit 6 centuries and 13 half-centuries. In 21 T20 International matches, he has scored 578 runs with the help of 1 century and 3 half-centuries.
