India head coach Gautam Gambhir has reacted to Virat Kohli's retirement from Test cricket. The India legend shocked the cricket fraternity with his retirement announcement on Monday (May 12).
There were reports that Virat had already informed the BCCI about his Test retirement. The board wanted him to be part of the upcoming Test series against England.Virat gave up red-ball cricket nearly two weeks before the selection meeting for the series. Gambhir will have his task cut out as coach as India will be without the services of Virat and Rohit Sharma. "A man with lion's passion! Will miss u cheeks," he wrote on X for Virat Kohli.

Interestingly, Gambhir played his last Test under under Virat's captaincy. He made his India comeback in 2016 and was in the team for a part of the series against New Zealand and England. He was dropped for the last 3 Tests against England and couldn't make his national comeback again.Virat made his Test debut against West Indies in July 2011. After getting dropped at the start of his career, Virat came up with solid performances in the 2011/12 Border-Gavaskar Trophy to cement his place in the Test team.He made his Test captaincy debut in Australia in 2014 and replaced MS Dhoni on a full-time basis following his retirement. In 2018/19, Virat-led India created history by becoming the first Asian team to win a Test series in Australia.Virat finished his captaincy career as India's most successful Test captain and led the team to 40 wins from 68 matches. Virat stepped down from the top job after the series defeat against South Africa early in 2022.Virat piled up 9230 runs in 123 Test matches. He hit 30 centuries and 31 fifties in the format. The future ICC Hall of Famer will continue to play ODI cricket.
