Delhi: The second match of the five -Test series between England and India will be played in Azbaston from 2 July today. Before this match, Indian captain Shubman Gill spoke openly on the batting of Team India’s lower order. He admitted that the lower order of the team is not able to contribute many times as other teams.

What did Gill say in the press conference?

Gill said in the press conference, “This is one of the things we always talk about. Especially with the depth of our batting that our lower sequence is sometimes not able to contribute as much as other teams.”

Recalling his 147 runs in the first Test, the Indian captain said that he could have a longer partnership with Rishabh Pant. He said, “But, after saying so, you can also see the other side. I was batting for 147 runs and the way I was out, maybe I could have scored 50 runs in partnership with Rishabh. If you get a good ball and you get out it is fine.”

Shubman also said that when the lower order is not able to help much, the top order batsmen should take more responsibility so that the opposition team does not get a chance to return. He said, “But once you freeze and you know that your batting order is not really so deep, then perhaps the top order can take a little more responsibility. So I think these have different approaches to watch the game, but of course your lower order when your last 5 or 6 batsmen do not contribute that much, then it becomes easy for the opposition to come back to the game.”

It is clear from this honest response of Gill that Team India is now thinking seriously on the depth and balance of its batting order, especially when there is a strong team like in front.
