The Indian batter Shreyas Iyer is set to replace Suryakumar Yadav as India’s new T20I captain as the national selectors are set to finalise the squad for the UK tour and Asian Games in Japan.
The tour of the UK will feature a couple of T20Is against Ireland in June, followed by a five-match T20I series and a three-match ODI series.
Meanwhile, the Asian Games will be played in September-October in Nagoya, Aichi, and the squad is being announced early ahead of the deadlines.
On the other hand, Mumbai Indians batter Tilak Varma is set to be named as vice captain with the 15-year old Vaibhav Suryavanshi set for his maiden senior team callup.
Both Suryakumar Yadav and Axar Patel will not continue in the leadership roles despite winning the T20 World Cup earlier this year.
Additionally, Suryakumar Yadav will be dropped from squad after his enduring poor form over the last 18 months which he is suspected to have played with a wrist injury.
Meanwhile, Shreyas Iyer who is not part of the T20 World Cup squad, is expected to take on No.4 slot in the batting inup.
He is likely to be awarded with T20I returns, for being one of the most efficient captain having taken three different franchise (Delhi Capitals, Kolkata Knight Riders and Punjab Kings) to IPL finals, winning the trophy twice.
His batting has also been impressive while captainin and his solid run with the bat was the positive during Punjab Kings’ fail during the second half of the IPL after starting out rather well.
It is understood that chairman of selectors Ajit Agarkar is set to announce to seperate squads for the UK tour and the Asian Games set to be held in Japan in September-October.
The BCCI will be looking to make a possible squad even though the event clashed with a bilateral white-ball home series against West Indies at the same time.
For Asian Games, Tilak Varma could be seen leading the side with several IPL stars like Vaibhav Suryavanshi, Prince Yadav and Harsh Dubey is likely to be named in the squad.
On the other hand, it will be interesting to see Bhuvneshwar Kumar to be named in the squad after a 28-wicket haul in the IPL 2026 season.
