Delhi: When the team performs poorly, the captain is not the only one to blame, but sometimes the captain takes responsibility for the team's failure and leaves the leadership. After Pakistan's defeat in the ICC ODI World Cup last year, their captain Babar Azam did the same. This time during the ICC T20 World Cup, New Zealand captain Kane Williamson has followed the same path. In the T20 World Cup 2024, the Kiwi team could not make it to the Super 8, after which Williamson left the captaincy of the white ball format and also turned down New Zealand's central contract.

Let us tell you that New Zealand reached the semi-finals of the last three T20 World Cups. The Kiwi team also played in the 2021 World Cup final and this time they were eliminated from the group stage itself. In such a situation, Kane took responsibility for the team's failure and left the leadership of the limited overs format.
The matter does not end here. Williamson has also made it clear that he has withdrawn from the central contract. A report from the Blackcaps states that Kane has announced that he will play eight matches in the ICC World Test Championship before Christmas. Apart from this, he will also serve the team in black jersey in the ICC Champions Trophy to be held in February-March 2025.
According to the New Zealand Cricket Board (NCB), Williamson has given up the central contract as well as the T20 and ODI captaincy. It is worth noting that according to the rules of the Kiwi board, the players involved in the central contract are required to play in the national team and local tournaments.
I want to spend time with family: Williamson
Resigning from the captaincy, Williamson said, 'I will always help the team to progress in all formats. I am not ready to accept the central contract. It is a matter of pride for me to play cricket for New Zealand. Cricket has changed my life. Now I want to give more time to my family.'
It is noteworthy that Kane Williamson captained the New Zealand team in 91 ODIs and 75 T20 matches, in which the team won 47 ODIs and 39 T20 matches.
