West Indies opener Brandon King is likely to be sidelined for the rest of the ICC T20 World Cup 2024 after sustaining a side strain injury. The injury occurred while he was batting on 23 runs against England in the Super 8 clash in St. Lucia. He was then forced to retire hurt.

King hit a massive 101-meter six, kickstarting his momentum against England. He then unleashed an onslaught of boundaries against Jofra Archer and Sam Curran, building up serious momentum.

In the fifth over, King played a shot but then appeared to be in pain, prompting the medical team to come out to the ground. After a brief treatment, it was determined that King would be unable to continue, and he proceeded to walk off the field.

Shortly after, Cricket West Indies announced that King would not participate in the remainder of the match. Additionally, sources indicate he is likely to be ruled out of the entire tournament.

“Brandon King has sustained a side strain and will not feature in this evenings match,” read the statement.

King’s absence did not affect the Windies team. The Windies batters continued to fire, hoping to set an enormous total. But they were only able to reach 180-4 due to a fall of wickets in the latter part of the innings and some outstanding death bowling by England.

England batted with ease and chased the target with 2 overs to spare. The West Indies’ net run rate took a serious hit after the loss.

“Despite our worries, we remain hopeful that he (King) will be able to participate in the next game. Given his significance to the team, his recovery is of utmost importance,” remarked West Indies captain Rovman Powell after the loss against England.

After a strong start, scoring 34 runs in West Indies’ narrow victory over Papua New Guinea, Brandon King has struggled with a series of poor performances in the tournament.
