Andre Russell went for a single, which was never on, and ended up getting run out in the crucial match against South Africa in the ICC T20 World Cup 2024. He was batting on 15 runs off 9 balls when he took a chance against Anrich Nortje, whose throw found him short of the crease.
He could have taken the game out of South Africa’s reach as three overs were left with the co-hosts on 117. His dismissal impacted the overall total, and Rovman Powell’s team posted 135/8 in 20 overs.
Due to the rain break, the target was reduced to 123 in 17 overs, which the Proteas completed in 16.1 overs with three wickets in hand.
Ambati Rayuud slammed Russell for his needless run-out, which played a big role in his team’s defeat and elimination from the tournament.
“There was no need for that run as three overs were left, and Russell could have taken West Indies to a good total. Anrich Nortje’s throw was spot on but Russell deserves the blame for putting his team under pressure and it finally proved to be the difference in the end,” he said on Star Sports.
South Africa have topped Group 2 with three wins from as many matches, while England clinched the second spot.
