Of the 15 players of the Indian team that went to play the World Cup, 12 actually made it to the playing eleven – Yashasvi Jaiswal, Sanju Samson and Yuzvendra Chahal were tourists. The team brought great pride to the country – India won its second T20 World Cup by defeating South Africa in a thrilling final. If we talk about the global event, the drought of 11 years ended. For this, how was the performance of the 12 players who played matches during the tournament? This rating does not reduce the contribution of any player – this is just an attempt to assess the performance:
Jasprit Bumrah 10/10 : Record- 15 wickets at an average of 8.26 and an economy rate of 4.17. This name was the most discussed name in every team's camp before the World Cup and it is still the same after the World Cup. The way he snatched the match back from South Africa in the final will be the most memorable moment of this World Cup. 1-6 in two overs in the final and then the second spell led him straight to the title. Hence- Player of the Tournament and no one will call this selection wrong.
Rohit Sharma 9/10 : Record- 257 runs at an average of 36.71 and strike rate of 156.70. As the Indian captain, the whole country had a lot of expectations from him and playing under such conditions was not easy. Not being able to become the champion in every tournament was increasing this pressure. Even then he played by setting an example- No. 2 in the list of most runs in the tournament (only behind Rahmanullah Gurbaz with 281) and a successful captain. He retired from T20 International and his 92 runs in 41 balls against Australia in Super 8 will always be remembered in his career.
Axar Patel 8/10 : Record- 92 runs at an average of 23 and strike rate of 139.39 and 9 wickets at an economy rate of 7.86. Suddenly the expectations from him in the batting line-up increased and batting at number 4 is proof of this. His 20 off 18 balls against Pakistan and 47 off 31 balls in the final were very valuable. His spin in the semi-final in Georgetown was very special in the victory. Those players of the team who played better than expected.
Hardik Pandya 8/10 : 144 runs at an average of 48 and 151+ strike rate and 11 wickets at an economy rate of 7.64. This tournament and his all-round contribution in the World Cup victory will remain special in Hardik's career. Don't forget how he faced the situation in IPL and then joined the World Cup team with the 'news' of his family breaking up – even then his special contributions were against Bangladesh (50* and 1-32 in 27 balls), Australia (27* in 17 balls), England (23 in 13 balls) and the final match – defending 16 runs in the last over in the final was the 'icing on the cake'. Once again he became a contender in the captain's scheme.
Arshdeep Singh 8/10 : 17 wickets at 12.64 average and 7.16 economy rate. This tournament brought Arshdeep to the front line and the southpaw's opening and death over spells took him to India's highest wicket-taker. 2-20 in the final was also similar. Sunil Gavaskar is now talking about giving him a chance in red ball cricket.
Suryakumar Yadav 7/10 : Record 199 runs at an average of 28.42 and a strike rate of 135.37. No. 2 from India in the run chart of the tournament but somewhere the role of the team's top strike batsman was lacking. The 50 against USA and Afghanistan stirred up the old discussion that runs are scored only against such teams but 31 runs in 16 balls against Australia in Super 8 and 47 runs in 36 balls in the semi-final against England were very useful and on top of that the catch of David Miller in the final was amazing.
Kuldeep Yadav 7/10 : 10 wickets at an economy rate of 6.95. He got the chance to live up to the billing he was given in the World Cup squad by entering the playing eleven in the Super 8 round and played his role well – 2-24 against Australia and 3-19 in the semi-final against England were special. 0-45 in the final did not fit this reputation.
Rishabh Pant 5/10 : Record- 171 runs at an average of 24.72 and a strike rate of 127.61. After returning to cricket from injury, he was included in the World Cup team – this is not less but when he was playing, the team was expected to contribute better with his bat in the knockout round. After scoring 42 runs in 31 balls against Pakistan, the pressure of playing at number 3 got to him, although he was successful behind the stumps.
Virat Kohli 4/10 : Record- 151 runs at an average of 18.87 and a strike rate of 112.68. Okay, this was not Virat Kohli's tournament as a batsman, but what he played in the final will always be discussed- 76 runs in 59 balls and preventing the innings from collapsing. Another World Cup medal and a goodbye to his T20 International career. His tournament rating is not a correct measure of his 'stature'.
Shivam Dubey 4/10 : Record- 133 runs at an average of 22.16 and a strike rate of 114.65. The image of a strong strike batsman with which he was selected in the team and was made to play in matches with confidence- that intention was not fulfilled. The 27 runs in 16 balls in the final were the most special. The team needed more such cameo contributions.
Mohammed Siraj 4/10 : 1 wicket at an economy rate of 5.18. This record was largely responsible for the only change in the team – along with the pitches after the group stage making it necessary for spin to contribute more. Even then, we could have contributed better than what we played.
Ravindra Jadeja 1/10 : Record 35 runs at an average of 11.66 and strike rate of 159.09 and also 1 wicket. He will always want to remove this World Cup from his career record. One word is enough to rate him – he failed and especially when he was a big player of the team. Is there a place for him in the T20 format now?
