Six Indian players, including Rohit Sharma, make ICC’s T20 World Cup 2024 team

ICC announced their T20 World Cup 2024 Team of the Tournament, which included 6 Indian players, with Rohit Sharma named as captain. In addition to Sharma, the other Indian stars selected were Suryakumar Yadav, Jasprit Bumrah, Arshdeep Singh, Hardik Pandya and Axar Patel. The 12-player team was drawn from 4 different international teams.

After Afghanistan’s standout performance in reaching the T20 World Cup semifinals, three of their players have been named in the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2024 team. The team was chose by a selection panel which included commentators Harsha Bhogle, Ian Bishop, and Kass Naidoo, and the ICC General Manager of Cricket Wasim Khan.

Rohit Sharma, who led India to their second T20 World Cup title, was selected to captain the ICC’s squad. Sharma finished as the tournament’s second-highest run-scorer with 257 runs in eight innings, including a standout 92-run knock against Australia and a crucial 57 in the semi-final. After the title win, Sharma announced his retirement from T20I’s.

Afghan keeper Rahmanullah Gurbaz was the only player to outscore Sharma, joins him at the top of the order. Gurbaz’s impressive 281 runs, included three half-centuries and played a crucial role in Afghanistan’s historic semi-final berth. His pivotal 60-run knock against Australia was particularly instrumental in their successful Super 8s campaign.

Windies batter Nicholas Pooran secured the No. 3 spot, amassing 228 runs at a 38-run average. His standout performance was a blistering 98 runs off just 53 balls against Afghanistan. Meanwhile, Indian batter Suryakumar Yadav was recognized for his impactful innings, including a crucial 47 in the semi-final against England and a splendid 53 off 28 balls against Afghanistan in the Super 8s.

The only Australian in the squad, Marcus Stoinis stood out for his all-rounded heroics. He amassed 169 runs at an impressive average over 40 and a blistering strike rate above 160. Stoinis also contributed with the ball, taking 10 wickets.

Indian all-rounder Hardik Pandya earned selection with his impressive performance, scoring 144 runs at an average of 48 and taking 11 wickets, including a crucial final over in the final. His teammate Axar Patel also made significant contributions with both bat and ball, scoring 47 in the final and taking 3 for 23 against England in the semi-final.

Afghanistan skipper Rashid Khan claimed 14 wickets at a superb average of 12.78 and an economy rate of just over 6, earning him the 8th spot. Jasprit Bumrah, the player of the tournament, claimed 15 wickets at an average of 8.26 and an economy rate of 4.17. Bumrah’s decisive spell in the final proved crucial in securing victory for India.

Indian pacer Arshdeep Singh picked up tournament-high 17 wickets, including 2 for 20 in the final. Matching Singh’s impressive run was Afghanistan’s Fazalhaq Farooqi, who also secured 17 wickets, highlighted by a 4 for 17 spell against New Zealand.

South African speedster Anrich Nortje, We o was named the 12th man, looked remarkable with 15 wickets at an economy rate of less than six and an average of 13.40.
