Under the captaincy of Rohit Sharma, Team India won the T20 World Cup title in West Indies. After this, BCCI, happy with the performance of the team, announced a prize of Rs 125 crore. Now a champion player of the 1983 World Cup has also demanded prize money from the Board of Control for Cricket in India. He said that Kapil Dev's champion side had made the country proud at that time. Therefore, BCCI should honor their hard work and announce a reward for all of them like Rohit Sharma.
The 1983 World Champion player, on the condition of anonymity, put forth his views on Team India's victory and BCCI.
According to him, the Indian Cricket Board has adopted a double standard for Rohit Sharma and Kapil Dev's team. On one hand, a reward of 125 crores is being given. On the other hand, after the 1983 World Cup victory, the board had said that they do not have the money for this. This champion player said that 125 crores is a huge amount and he is happy for Rohit Sharma's team. However, he also pointed out that Kapil Dev's team did not get anything and now only a few players of that team are getting work. The rest of the cricketers have neither money nor work. Now BCCI also has money, so the board should give some reward now, what is stopping them from doing so.Apart from BCCI, Maharashtra government also organized a program for Rohit Sharma, Shivam Dubey, Yashasvi Jaiswal and Suryakumar Yadav and honored them. Along with this, a reward of Rs 11 crore was also announced. After this step of Maharashtra government, badminton player Chirag Shetty attacked the Maharashtra government. He said that Maharashtra government should look at all sports with the same eye. Shetty further said that when the Indian team won the Thomas Cup in Indonesia, which is equivalent to the World Cup, the state government did nothing then.
In 1983, the Indian Cricket Board was not that rich. Dilip Vengsarkar, who was the captain of Team India, had revealed that that is why the BCCI had given only 25 thousand cash prizes to the world champion team at that time. When India's great singer Lata Mangeshkar came to know about this, she organized a music concert for the world champion team captained by Kapil Dev and raised money. About 20 lakh rupees were received from that concert, from which all the players were given a prize of Rs 1 lakh each.
