Sunil Gavaskar urged the fans to join him in requesting the Indian government to honour Rahul Dravid with the Bharat Ratna, the highest civilian award of the country. Former India captain said Dravid deserves the honour for his contributions. Gavaskar commented after Dravid finished his coaching stint with the Men in Blue after contributing in India’s T20 World Cup 2024 success in the USA and the West Indies.

Sachin Tendulkar is the only Indian cricketer to have been given a prestigious Bharat Ratna Award. He won the honour in 2014. Gavaskar said Dravid has groomed a lot of young players during his tenure as the head of the National Cricket Academy and Team India.

“It would be apt if the Indian government honours Rahul Dravid with the Bharat Ratna,” Gavaskar wrote in his column for the Mid-Day.

“Earlier, the Bharat Ratna was given to leaders who had done something for the society. Their influence was restricted to their party and to the part of the country they belong to. Dravid’s achievements have given joy to everyone. He deserves the highest honour of India.”

“Everybody should join me in requesting the government to reward one of the greatest sons of India. Bharat Ratna, Rahul Sharad Dravid. Sounds good,” he further wrote.
