India captain Rohit Sharma has been showered with endless love, affection, and respect after winning the T20 World Cup title. India’s long-awaited ICC trophy drought finally came to an end, as they became the first undefeated team to win the T20 World Cup.
Rohit’s fearless batting at the top of the order and astute captaincy in marshalling the troops were truly commendable. He has been the center of attention for all the right reasons in the past few weeks, barring perhaps July 8.
In the midst of all the festivities and unending praise, Rohit Sharma angered supporters on Monday night by changing his profile photo on the social media platform X. Rohit’s photo infuriated many of his followers, who accused him of insulting the Indian flag.
The Indian team‘s T20 World Cup triumph was filled with iconic moments, but Rohit Sharma chose a specific photo as his new display picture on X – an image of him hoisting the Indian flag at Barbados’ Kensington Oval following India’s title victory over South Africa. While Rohit’s intent may have been to celebrate Indian team’s dominance, many fans perceived the act of planting the flag on foreign soil as inappropriate, as it is symbol of ownership over that territory.
However, the primary issue was how Rohit’s profile photo showed the Indian flag. In the picture, the tricolour was visible touching the ground. The tricolour may be seen touching the ground in the photo. The 1971 Prevention of Insults to National Honour Act contains a clause that reads, “The flag shall not be allowed to intentionally touch the ground, the floor, or trail in water.”
Rohit Sharma has announced his retirement from T20 international cricket but will continue captaining the Indian team in ODIs and Test matches. Additionally, reports indicate that Rohit and Virat Kohli are unlikely to participate in the upcoming Sri Lanka ODI series. The two senior players have reportedly requested for the extended break after a grueling schedule over the past few months.
