Delhi: Former Indian team veteran opener Gautam Gambhir is set to become the head coach of Team India ahead of the Sri Lanka tour starting on July 28. According to a recent report, Gambhir, who was seeking his coaching staff, has got the green signal from the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) and Abhishek Nair may join his support staff as batting coach.

Many reports are also claiming that Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) fielding coach and former South African legend Jonty Rhodes has been approached to become India's fielding coach.

Will Abhishek Nair become India's batting coach?

Nair may not have scored any runs for India but he has been an important mentor to Indian captain Rohit Sharma, star wicketkeeper Dinesh Karthik, opener Shubman Gill and many other Indian players.

His domestic career has also been great. The 40-year-old has scored 5749 runs in 103 first-class matches at an average of 45.62, including 13 centuries and 32 half-centuries. His highest individual score has been 259 runs. Apart from this, he has also taken 173 wickets.

The former left-handed batsman scored 2145 runs in 99 List A matches at an average of 31.08. During this, he scored 2 centuries and 10 half-centuries. At the same time, the right-handed pacer also took 79 wickets. If we talk about Nair's T20 career, he scored 1291 runs in 95 matches at an average of 21.51, in which the former all-rounder scored 3 half-centuries and took 27 wickets.

He played a crucial innings of 99 runs in the 2008–09 Ranji Trophy final, ensuring Mumbai's 38th title.

Apart from this, Nair was also a part of Mumbai Indians (MI) in the Indian Premier League (IPL) in early 2008. It is known that Abhishek has played 3 ODIs for India, in which he could not score any runs in 1 innings. In his international career, he bowled 18 balls, but was not successful in taking a single wicket.
