In that debut series against West Indies, Gavaskar scored a record 774 runs in 4 Test matches. During this period, Gavaskar's average was 154.80. In this series, he scored 4 centuries including a double century and 3 half-centuries.

Sunil Gavaskar is the first cricketer to reach the 10,000-run mark in Test cricket history. Apart from this, he scored 3092 runs in 108 ODIs for India, including one century. Gavaskar was also a part of the Indian team that won the 1983 World Cup.
