After making a splash in IPL 2024, Abhishek Sharma has also made his first international series memorable. By scoring a century in the second match of his international career, he told that he is fully prepared to make a splash at this level. Abhishek, who was out for zero in the first T20 International, scored a century in just 46 balls in the second match played in Harare. During this innings of Abhishek, his art of hitting sixes once again mesmerized the fans.
The ease with which Abhishek was seen hitting sixes makes it seem that he is a horse for a long race.
The way this Punjab and SRH batsman is batting at the moment, it seems that this batsman will make a big record of sixes this year. In fact, Abhishek has a chance to hit the most sixes by an Indian batsman in a calendar year.Since 2023, only four top order (1-3) batsmen – Will Jacks, Jos Buttler, Phil Salt and Rahmanullah Gurbaz – have hit more than 100 sixes in all T20s.
While Abhishek is sixth (93) on this list, the most among all Indians except Suryakumar Yadav (99). At the same time, Abhishek has so far hit 50 sixes in 19 innings played in the year 2024, including 41 as an opener and 9 sixes in two innings at number 3 for Sunrisers Hyderabad.Interestingly, he has hit more sixes (50) than fours (44) so far this year, with the maximums contributing more than 50 per cent (300 out of 594) to his total runs. Abhishek is just a few steps away from breaking the record for most T20 sixes by an Indian top-order batsman in a calendar year.
The record is currently held by Yashasvi Jaiswal, who hit 57 sixes in a stellar 2023 season. While Suryakumar Yadav holds the record for most T20 sixes by an Indian in a calendar year. Surya achieved this feat by hitting 85 sixes in the year 2022.After reaching the half-century of sixes so soon, the big question now is whether Abhishek will be able to touch the figure of 100 sixes this year. So far only Chris Gayle and Andre Russell have been able to achieve this feat. Gayle holds all the major 'sixes' records in this format. Gayle, who has hit more than 1000 T20 sixes, hit 135 sixes in just 36 innings in the 2015 season. After him, Andre Russell is the only other batsman to hit 100 sixes in a calendar year, who achieved this feat in 2019.
In such a situation, if Abhishek surpasses Gayle's mark of 135 sixes, it will be nothing less than a miracle, but before that Abhishek will be eyeing 100 sixes this year and if Abhishek succeeds in doing this, then this will be a record that any other Indian batsman will have to work hard to break. India have to play 12 more T20 matches this year and Abhishek is likely to be a part of Punjab's Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy 2024-25 campaign, so this left-handed batsman may have a chance to play at least 19 matches to make this record before the new year 2025.
