All-rounder Ravindra Jadeja, a crucial member of India‘s ODI team for the past decade, is notably absent from the squads selected for the upcoming tour of Sri Lanka.
With Ravindra Jadeja’s retirement from T20Is, the new coaching staff led by Gautam Gambhir is searching for potential replacements to fill the spin-bowling all-rounder role ahead of the upcoming Champions Trophy tournament.
“With only six ODIs remaining before next year’s Champions Trophy, including three in Sri Lanka, the selectors plan to utilize this limited window by providing more opportunities to Axar Patel and Washington Sundar,” revealed a BCCI source.
Jadeja boasts an impressive ODI record, amassing 2756 runs at a 32.42 average and 85.06 strike rate, while also claiming 220 wickets at an average of 36.07 and an economy of 4.88. Despite this, the management is reportedly keen on exploring alternative options to build the team for the future.
“Despite Jadeja’s solid performance, the team management is exploring other options as they focus on building a strong squad for the future,” the source added.
Axar Patel has established himself as India’s first-choice spin all-rounder, while Washington Sundar is viewed as the secondary option for that role. Ravindra Jadeja’s standing in the Test team remains secure, considering his crucial importance to India’s World Test Championship aspirations, particularly in home conditions.
“Jadeja’s exceptional Test performances, particularly his unmatched bowling in home conditions, make him a crucial asset for India’s World Test Championship campaign,” he stated.
Team India will embark on a tour of Sri Lanka, kicking off with a T20I match on July 27 in Pallekele, followed by a three-match ODI series in Colombo starting on August 2. The new team management’s decisions signal a strategic shift focused on developing future talent in preparation for the upcoming Champions Trophy.
