The BCCI has appointed Suryakumar Yadav as the captain of the Indian team for the upcoming three-match T20I series against Sri Lanka. This decision ends the intense speculation over whether Yadav or Hardik Pandya would be selected to lead the team after Rohit Sharma‘s retirement.
Despite no official confirmation of permanence, Suryakumar Yadav’s selection as captain over Hardik Pandya, who was also in the squad, suggests he is being groomed as Rohit Sharma’s successor in India’s T20I team. As one of the top batters in T20I’s, Suryakumar appears to be the frontrunner to take over the captaincy in the shortest format.
While many fans felt Pandya deserved the captaincy, the social media response to Suryakumar’s appointment has been largely positive. In his first statement since being named captain, The 33-year old thanked fans for the support he has received in recent days.
He posted a picture on Instagram with the caption,” Thank you so much for outpouring love, support and best wishes from you. Last few weeks have been nothing short of a dream and I am truly grateful. Playing for the country is the most special feeling that I will never be able to describe in words. This new role brings with it, a lot of responsibility, excitement and enthusiasm. I hope to keep receiving your support and blessings. All fame reaches God, God is great,”
Last year, the dynamic batter captained the Indian T20I team during their home series against Australia and away series versus South Africa. Meanwhile, Pandya – who had served as India’s T20 World Cup vice-captain – reportedly fell out of contention due to concerns over his persistent injury struggles.
Shubman Gill has been named the vice-captain of India’s T20I and ODI teams for the upcoming Sri Lanka series. Leading the second-string Indian team, Gill spearheaded a commanding 4-1 series victory over Zimbabwe. Sanju Samson, who served as Gill’s deputy during the Zimbabwe tour, has also been included in the white-ball squad for the Sri Lanka series.
