Delhi: India's star fast bowler Mohammed Shami recently made a big statement about the retirement of former Indian captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni. It is worth noting that there is speculation about the retirement of the legendary Indian cricketer after the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024.
After leading Chennai Super Kings (CSK) to their fifth IPL title in 2023, Dhoni had promised his fans to return for one more season and, hence, play in the 2024 edition of the tournament. However, after Chennai failed to reach the playoffs of the tournament, Dhoni was expected to announce his retirement.
However, the former CSK captain has not yet made any announcement in this regard. Recently, Shami gave his opinion on Dhoni's retirement and said that only the media wants him to retire and the cricketer is not much worried about it.
Shami said on a podcast with Shubhankar Mishra, “You (media) people are questioning his future. He himself is saying, 'We will see'.”
Speaking further, Shami recalled his conversation with Dhoni about retirement, in which the cricketer gave his opinion on when a player should retire.
Shami further said, “I talked to Mahi bhai about this and asked when should a player retire? He said, “First when you get bored and second, when you feel that you are going to get addicted.”
Shami is slowly getting fit
Meanwhile, Mohammed Shami is undergoing rehab at the National Cricket Academy (NCA) after a successful surgery for his ankle injury. The fast bowler last played for India in the ODI World Cup 2023, where he was the highest wicket-taker in the tournament with 24 wickets. The fast bowler will be eager to regain fitness ahead of the important Border Gavaskar Trophy and Champions Trophy 2025 in Australia.
