MI New York captain Kieron Pollard was elated after dismissing the formidable Andre Russell during the do-or-die match against the Los Angeles Knight Riders (LAKR). This crucial wicket sealed the end of LAKR’s innings at the Grand Prairie Stadium in Dallas on Sunday, July 21.
The defending champions bowled with fierce determination, reducing LAKR to 102-9 in the 17th over. However, Russell’s defiant innings at the crease allowed him to inflict significant damage, stretching his team’s total in the final overs.
Russell blistering knock included four boundaries against Rashid Khan, Romario Shepherd, and Trent Boult, propelling the team’s total to 130 runs. Racing to 35 runs off just 20 deliveries, he then faced off against his former national teammate Kieron Pollard in the final over.
Attempting to pull Pollard’s length delivery, Russell could only manage a top edge. Wicket-keeper Nicholas Pooran reacted quickly, darting to his left to claim a superb catch, sparking wild celebrations from a jubilant Pollard.
The West Indies veteran went on punch the air in a wild celebration and also let out a frenzied scream.
MI New York chased the target in 17 overs and won the game by 4 wickets. They have qualified for the playoffs at the last minute.
Skipper Pollard, who was having a dismal run with the bat, smashed an unbeaten 33 of 12 deliveries, recording his first double digit score of the season. The 37-year old has also made valuable contributions with the ball, taking 5 wickets at an impressive economy rate of just 6.40 and providing timely strikes for his team.
