India's One Day International (ODI) team is entering a transitional phase. The selectors have to balance between established players and fresh faces that are making waves in Test and first-class cricket. Ajit Agarkar's committee named India's 15-man ODI squad for the upcoming home series against the West Indies that begins on September 27 in Thiruvananthapuram on September 16. Although a number of players have strengthened their case for the limited-overs format, not all of those on the periphery could make it to the team. Some have already played for India in the shortest format, while some may get a chance in the future.

Let's take a look at three Indian Test batters who could get another shot in the ODI format

1. Rishabh Pant

Rishabh Pant continues to be one of the game's most feared wicket-keeper batsmen, but has been far less consistent in his performances in the ODI format in recent months.

The left-hander's last ODI appearance came on August 7, 2024, against Sri Lanka, while he has averaged 33.50 in 31 ODIs, scoring 871 runs with one century and a half-century to his name.

Pant has also played a key role in India's white-ball success story in recent years, including being a member of the 2024 T20 World Cup-winning squad and the 2025 Champions Trophy Champions.

However, Pant was not selected in India's ODI squad for the West Indies home series, with Jurel preferred as the second-choice wicketkeeper-batsman.

Pant was also left out of the previous home ODI series against Afghanistan, which has raised questions over his position in the ODI set-up.

The 24-year-old's red-ball duties have also continued as he was named captain of the Rest of India side for the Irani Cup match against Jammu and Kashmir, following his last Test appearance against Sri Lanka on August 15, 2026.

2. Dhruv Jurel

Dhruv Jurel was rewarded with a recall to the ODI squad for the West Indies series as the second-choice wicketkeeper-batter, with Ishan Kishan participating in the Asian Games 2026.

The 25-year-old has not featured in an ODI since India toured Australia, and could provide valuable solidity with the bat and behind the stumps as the selectors look to build upon India's rich white-ball record over the next year or so.

Jurel has also displayed his ODI credentials in List A cricket, with 17 innings yielding 747 runs at 74.70, including two centuries and six fifties.

His strike rate of 113.35 in this format also underlines his credentials as a damaging middle-order batter capable of rotating strike with KL Rahul or Shreyas Iyer.

With an unbeaten 160 as his best List A score, Jurel could feature more regularly in India's ODI squad, with KL Rahul likely to remain the first-choice wicketkeeper for the foreseeable future.

3. Devdutt Padikkal

Devdutt Padikkal boasts an enviable List A average of 82.23, and has enjoyed his time on the domestic circuit, with the Karnataka left-hander adding to his already considerable experience at international level.

The 32-year-old also contributed vital runs during India's Test series against Sri Lanka, which has further added to his appeal as a potential multi-format batter for the national team.

Padikkal was not included in India's 15-man ODI squad for the West Indies series, while he was also left out of the T20I fixtures.

His excellent List A record remains a valid argument for consideration if/when India require more depth in their batting line-up, or choose to utilize his talents as the back-up wicketkeeper.

It seems that Pant's position as first-choice ODI wicketkeeper is under threat, with Jurel enjoying greater opportunities at international level.

While Jurel has secured his place in the ODI squad for the West Indies series, Pant's future appearances will depend on his performances and form ahead of key international fixtures.
