India captain Shubman Gill was involved in an injury scare on Friday after being hit on the right elbow while batting in the nets, two days before the first ODI against West Indies in Thiruvananthapuram. Gill was facing Mohammed Siraj during practice when a rearing-length delivery hit him on the elbow, making him retire immediately in pain.
The India ODI and Test captain was tending to the physiotherapist, who was looking over him, while Siraj checked him over before Virat Kohli also came over. Gill then sat down clutching his elbow, while the support staff strapped his hand.
He did not bat again for the remaining session and spent the rest of the training recovering.Shubman Gill was more at ease in the later stages of the session and was seen teasing Gurnoor Brar before walking back. Gill has a day and a half to recover from the scare before India take on West Indies in the three-match ODI series that begins on Sunday.
The latest blow follows Shubman Gill's ring finger injury during the warm-up session prior to the Test series against Sri Lanka, which he recovered from in time to play the series.
Shubman Gill was in fine form before Friday's scare. He arrived early for the session and batted with Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, and Ruturaj Gaikwad. While he was beaten on the outside edge on a couple of occasions by Nitish Kumar Reddy as the pacer generated bounce, Gill remained confident. He looked good value against Gurnoor Brar, driving the leg-spinner to the boundary several times.
Furthermore, India has been plagued by injuries this year. All-rounder Hardik Pandya and seam bowler Jasprit Bumrah were forced to miss key matches during England's limited-overs campaign.
Washington Sundar, Harshit Rana, and Nitish Kumar Reddy have also contributed to India's injury list. Bumrah and Reddy have since returned to the fold, but Pandya and Rana continue to be sidelined.India bowling coach Morne Morkel was at pains to explain the glut of injuries as he addressed the media in Ahmedabad on Friday, as reported by Cricinfo.
“Obviously, you want to have your strongest and, condition-wise, the best XI on the park. Sadly, it's part of the game that the guys got injured at times when we didn't ideally want them to fall injured. But luckily, we've got fantastic backup in the wings, and it's a great opportunity for the guys to go and play a game for India, to make a name for themselves, and to compete,” he said.
Morkel added that India would like to put the injuries behind them and have their best XI available for the crucial matches in the years ahead.
