Amit Mishra, who was once considered one of the top spinners in India, recently opened many wounds during a podcast and especially lashed out at Virat Kohli. Not only did he accuse Virat of 'changing' after becoming famous – he also said that MS Dhoni and Virat Kohli were ignored when they were captains. He went further and alleged that to impress the selectors 'just playing good cricket is not everything – being in the captain's favourites also matters a lot.'
He had a great rapport with Dhoni but he says that in 2010, despite a good performance in a Test match against Bangladesh, he was dropped from the playing eleven. He hoped that everything would change if Kohli became the captain but he was ignored repeatedly. In this list, he also listed many names like R Ashwin, Sanju Samson, Shikhar Dhawan, Suresh Raina, Yuzvendra Chahal. How much truth is there in such allegations of not playing? Under Virat's captaincy, Amit Mishra took 33 wickets in 9 Tests which is not a bad record but he could never become the first choice. 5 important names of this discussion:
Ambati Rayudu : This is not the first time that his name has come up in such discussions. Despite consistently good performance, he kept getting into trouble/controversies in team selection. That is why he once retired from IPL in anger but when he came to his senses, he took a U-turn. He could not even play easily in Hyderabad cricket. He had to face many difficulties. His not being able to make it to the 1999 World Cup team was a surprise to the entire cricket world.
Parthiv Patel: This wicketkeeper-batsman was never the number 1 choice and despite an impressive domestic record, he struggled to secure a place in the team. He also played for RCB and when the team failed to win the IPL trophy, he once criticized the RCB team culture and said that there are always 'some special people' who are everything. Initially, every comparison was made with Dhoni, so he paled in that and did not get many opportunities. He also adds the name of the brilliant wicketkeeper-batsman Naman Ojha to this list. He played only 5 Tests under Virat's captaincy – made a record of 21 catches and 2 stumps.
Manoj Tiwari : He has not understood till date why he played only white ball matches and never got a Test cap despite having a good first class record. Even in ODIs, after scoring 100 (104*- against West Indies, December 2011), he was ignored for 14 matches.
Piyush Chawla : Piyush is a talented leg spinner, who has been very effective in limited overs cricket but has often been sidelined in team selection. Chawla has played 35 international matches (3 Tests, 25 ODIs and 10 T20s) but has never been considered at the top and – who is still playing in the IPL – has not found a place in any Team India since 2012.
Shikhar Dhawan : He is considered a friend of Virat Kohli but his record of team selection is different. Out of 68 Tests under Virat's captaincy, he played only 21 Tests and was never a regular despite having a 40+ average and 4 centuries in them. Similarly, he played only 72 out of Kohli's 95 ODIs although he scored 3000+ runs with a 47+ average and 7 centuries.
