Former India opener Gautam Gambhir became the head coach of the national side in 2024. He succeeded ex-teammate Rahul Dravid, who was at the helm for two and a half years. It was under Dravid’s coaching that the Men in Blue broke the long wait for an ICC title after they won the 2024 T20 World Cup.
After Gambhir’s arrival, the team has gone on to win two more ICC titles and the Asia Cup. Despite his success, Australia legend Shane Watson is not happy with the way the 45-year-old has handled the team. Watson, in his chat with Prime Video Australia and New Zealand’s YouTube channel, said the constant changes in Indian cricket have made the team inconsistent.
“The reason India have been inconsistent under Gambhir is because of the constant changes in the batting order. Players are constantly coming in and going out of the side. The changes in the batting order make it difficult for a side to be consistent.”
While Watson may have a point, India’s head coach has taken a more consistent approach in the last few months. After losses against Ireland and England, the team has more or less remained the same.
Gautam Gambhir is renowned for backing his players. Watson praised his former opponent for the way he has thrown his weight behind Sanju Samson over the last few weeks.
“There are also some incredible things Gambhir has been able to bring into this Indian setup. He has done wonders for someone like Samson by backing him, and the player too has repaid the faith by doing well in the backend of the 2026 T20 World Cup.”
Watson was asked what it would take for India to become successful in Tests under Gambhir. “There are too many changes being made under Gambhir. There has to be continuity. If they do that, India will be hard to beat.”
