Former India batter Virender Sehwag has lauded the 15-year-old Vaibhav Sooryavanshi for his fearless batting. Sehwag said that Vaibhav’s approach to attack from the first ball could help him in the longer run as the batter looks to cement his place in the Indian team.

Sehwag compared Sooryavanshi’s mindset to his own style, saying the performance should determine the player’s spot in the team. Speaking at the PHD Chamber of Commerce and Industry’s annual session on Saturday, Sehwag opined on the young batter’s career.

“Sooryavanshi is thinking like me and he is hitting from the first delivery. It is about when he gets the chance and how many matches he plays for the country,” Sehwag said.

“The age-category matters if you are playing in it. But once a player competes in the IPL or plays for India, age shouldn’t be the barrier. A 38- or 40-year-old Virat Kohli is playing for India and a 15-year-old is also playing. The performance matters in the end,” he added.

Sehwag amassed 17,253 runs across formats in international cricket and for known for taking on the bowlers.

Sooryavanshi is following the same trend and he is dominating the bowlers but his chances in the senior team  have been limited as the team management continues to back Abhishek Sharma and Sanju Samson.

Vaibhav Sooryavanshi has been benched in the first two T20Is against the West Indies, with the decision-makers preferring the senior players. India defeated the West Indies by 8 wickets in the series opener but suffered a defeat in the second game.

India bowling coach Morne Morkel wants the young batter to learn from the senior members of the side and wait for his chances.

He challenged Vaibhav to observe the tactical side of the game. His chances of playing in the third T20I depend on the team combination and the management’s assessment.

In 8 T20Is for India, he has scored 246 runs at an average of 30.75 and a strike rate of 186.16. The left-handed batter has struck two fifties and is one of the most watched-out players.

He has been sensational for Rajasthan Royals in the Indian Premier League and accumulated over 750 runs in the IPL 2026, winning several awards.

Vaibhav made his international debut against England aged 15 years and 99 days. However, he has played a T20I on home soil and with the team backing the 2026 T20 World Cup winning stars, it seems Vaibhav will have to warm the matches in the remaining matches of the ongoing bilateral assignments against the Shai Hope-led team.

Team India head coach Gautam Gambhir had already told the batter to wait as he can’t drop the players, who have been performing for a long time.
