Rovman Powell and Sherfane Rutherford have been sanctioned by the International Cricket Council for their behaviour during the second T20I against India on Friday (October 9). One demerit point each was added to their records for separate incidents in Ranchi, which the Men in Maroon won by six wickets. The ICC has confirmed that the two acted against the spirit of the game.

Powell hit the ball after being bowled by India pacer Mayank Yadav in the run chase.

On the other hand, Rutherford yelled at the umpire after a delivery was not given wide in the 13th over.

Powell breached Article 2.2 of the ICC Code of Conduct, which deals with the abuse of cricket equipment, after the batter struck the ball with his bat following his dismissal in the sixth over of the West Indies innings.

Rutherford was found guilty of breaching Article 2.8, which relates to dissent against a decision given by the umpire. He reacted aggressively when one of the deliveries in the 13th over was declared legitimate despite the batter thinking that it was a wide.

Both players admitted to their offences and accepted the sanctions proposed by match referee Prakash Bhatt, and there was no need for a formal hearing. The charges were levelled by on-field umpires Jayaraman Madanagopal and Rohan Pandit, third umpire Nitin Menon and fourth umpire Virender Sharma.

The Level 1 breach carries a minimum penalty of a reprimand, a maximum fine of 50 percent of the match fee, or one of two demerit points.

Powell amassed 24 runs off 13 balls at No. 4 in the second T20I while  Rutherford posted 84 runs off 37 balls. The southpaw struck seven fours and seven sixes and stitched a 120-run stand for the fourth wicket with skipper Shai Hope, who scored an unbeaten knock of 102 runs off 45 balls.

Rutherford missed out on a well-deserving hundred and was dismissed by Kuldeep Yadav. However, he put his team in the driving seat before returning to the dugout.

It was his second consecutive fifty in the series, having scored a half-century in the series opener.
