Former Indian cricket captain Rahul Dravid, known worldwide as “The Wall,” is known for his calm demeanor and composure. His composure remained unwavering even in the most challenging on-field situations. This is why he is known as “Mr. Dependable.” However, cricket history also records an incident when this calm player’s patience broke down and, in a fit of rage, he even threw a chair in the dressing room.
This incident occurred in 2006, when the Indian team was playing a three-match Test series against England. The final and decisive match of the series was being played at Mumbai’s historic Wankhede Stadium. India lost the match, resulting in a 1-1 draw. Rahul Dravid was so hurt and angry at missing out on the series that he threw a chair in the dressing room after the match, expressing his displeasure. This act of Dravid was shocking even to his teammates, as he had rarely been seen losing his temper like this on the field or in the dressing room.
Beyond the dressing room incident, another instance of Dravid’s anger occurred during the 2004 tour of Pakistan. During a press conference, when a journalist asked a question to match-fixing, the former captain became furious. He even asked the journalist to immediately leave the press conference. This firm stance by Dravid clearly demonstrated his seriousness regarding matters to the dignity of the game and the integrity of the team.
Although Rahul Dravid serves as a successful coach and mentor to the Indian cricket team today, his discipline and dedication to the game are still remembered as examples among fans. His aggressive and serious attitude toward defeat demonstrates that while he may appear calm off the field, the fire of victory always burned within.
