The names Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma, along with the year 2027 for the World Cup, evoke so many thoughts that one does not need to complete the sentence.
It has been a topic of thousands of conversations in the past three years, the subject of endless arguments on radio talk shows and in bar-room brawls, a source of tension between selectors and a million Twitter reactions.
A dream that has been shot down by so much criticism and skepticism, despite the aura around the two superstars of Indian cricket, is close to being fulfilled.
The wait for the biggest event in cricket is about to begin as the one-year mark will arrive soon enough, and the speculation around the two captains will be put to rest as a question that had a yes attached to it for a long time will have to find an answer.
Though the two had come close in 2023, so many things have changed for the Indian team in the last two years: a new captaincy, a new coach, unfamiliar conditions in the overseas subcontinent, and the evolution of the game itself.
With the experience that the two legends will bring on the field, coupled with their decreasing age, the Indian team will see the sunset of a glorious era in the World Cup.
Scoring centuries has never been a problem for two men with over 27,000 ODI runs between them. It was the method by which those tons had to come that they struggled with.
Rather than be made relics by the white ball's hyper-aggressive evolution, both chose to re-engineer their styles, post-2025 Champions Trophy, when the bat and glove were passed to Shubman Gill.
As the new captain of the Indian team, Rohit Sharma has found a more measured approach to the game, unfettered from the need to always go for the full throttle from 1.0.0.
As the 'Hitman' has reinvented his game for captain Gill's era, his powerplay strike rate has dropped deliberately, from an almost frantic 109.40 to 75.90, while the number of his early dismissals has dropped dramatically, with his average reaching an impressive 53.50.Virat Kohli, on the other hand, has had his evolution take a different path. Inspired by his staggering 741-run IPL 2024, Kohli has imbued his 50-over game with raw, unadulterated T20 juice.
His boundary frequencies have improved vastly, hitting a six every 9.01 balls, compared to 10.12 previously and his strike rate since 2025 has crossed beyond the 103 mark. All traces of his tentative instincts have disappeared, and now Kohli dismantles bowling attacks quicker and more efficiently. There was a moment, post 2025 Champions Trophy, when Indian cricket had two minds about their next move. Appointing Shubman Gill as the next skipper of the team was an intelligent step to look ahead to the future, rather than leave the transition to chance.
But a year later, the weight of Rohit and Virat's performances has erased any alternative. Simply put, if not them, then who? And if not now, then when?
Both the veterans have already had a decade plus in the game, so the less meddling by the team management, the better the results have been for India. The biggest threat to India's 2027 hopes isn't their skills, but the nation's infamous knee-jerk reactions. A failed series in New Zealand against a moving ball, or a brief dry patch, can be enough to start up the narrative.
To win a World Cup, both players need absolute clarity and faith. They have shown in 2023 that they can deliver when the team's environment has been secure; replicating that environment will be the key to ultimate glory.
Despite not having any titles attached to their names, Rohit and Virat continue to be the emotional and tactical heart of the team.
A quiet, two-minute chat on camera between Gill and Kohli after the first ODI against the West Indies encapsulated the situation very well. Kohli had this to say on why they make the effort:
“I have been in that position for a long time, and now I am a senior player. So, when senior players or the leaders in the team are smiling and laughing, keeping the environment light, all the other players feel like, 'Yeah, there's no problem at all.' Even if it is a big pressure game… it just relaxes the other guys.”
This invisible leadership has manifested itself in other ways too, such as how Kohli has guided Rajat Patidar at Royal Challengers Bengaluru, or the lasting impact that Rohit has on a team full of players who came of age under his captaincy.
As the countdown begins towards 2027, dissecting strike rates, wagon wheels and team balances only gives us a part of the truth.
Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli have earned their place to write their own endings. They have spent over a decade showing the world just how close the sport can get, and in twelve months' time on cricket's grandest stage, they will get their final chance to show how it is done.
