Wednesday, October 14, was meant to be a coronation night for the Men in Blue at the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium. Instead, it turned out to be an evening of record-breaking carnage and sobering milestones.
While Shai Hope and his West Indies side celebrated a commanding 24-run victory to level the five-match series 2-2, Shreyas Iyer's India walked off the field carrying more than just the sting of a defeat.
The high-scoring thriller of India vs West Indies Hyderabad left a heavy imprint on the record books–none of which the hosts will care to revisit.
When invited to bat first on the Uppal track, the visitors made a mockery of it, posting a huge total of 247/3. Shai Hope continued his dream series with a well-made 102 off 50 balls, while Sherfane Rutherford accelerated the scoring before falling in a spectacular manner off 49 off 26 balls.
Chasing the monstrous total, India got off to a flyer with Sanju Samson hitting 56 off 23 balls, but the chase was a bit too much for them as they eventually fell short by a huge margin. Arshdeep Singh had to retire hurt, and with that, India eventually fell short for the second time in a row in the tournament, posting a meager 223 all out in 19.3 overs.
1. Second Highest T20I Total Conceded Against India
Bowlers were absolutely brutal on the Indian bowlers, especially the pacers, as the visitors posted a video game score of 247/3 on the Uppal track, which became the second-highest T20I total against India in the history of the game. Only once before has India lost by such a big margin in T20I cricket. It happened earlier this year when England posted a ridiculous 257/3 against India at Southampton.
The previous record for the West Indies against India was also in Lauderhill back in 2016 when they scored 245/6 in their innings. It was also the fourth-highest T20I total for the West Indies as a team, with their best coming against South Africa at Centurion back in 2023 when they posted a ridiculous 258/5.
2. Hyderabad Witnesses Second-Highest T20I Total
The venue in Hyderabad has always been a happy hunting ground for the batters, but on Wednesday, it witnessed the second-highest team total in T20I history. The West Indies posted 247/3 against the Indians before eventually losing the match in a stunning turn of events. India's 223-run reply was also a massive score for the home conditions, but it fell short of the record team total at Hyderabad.
India has the record team total at Hyderabad with their 297/6 against Bangladesh at the same venue back in 2024. The innings saw Sanju Samson playing one of his best knocks in a while, scoring a ridiculous 111 off just 47 balls. However, the visitors made a mockery of their own record at the venue with their 247/3, bettering their previous bests against the Men in Blue, Pakistan, and the Windies.
3. Historic Loss at Hyderabad Ends Hosts' T20I Invincibility
The visitors managed to end a long-standing unbeaten streak of the home team at Hyderabad. It was the first-ever men's T20I match lost by India at the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium. Prior to this, India had won all the T20I matches played at the venue. The home team had made the stadium their own, winning all the crucial bilateral T20I matches at the venue.
India had beaten the Windies twice before at Hyderabad in 2019 and 2022, with a six-wicket win and a 12-run win in the second match. Not to forget the 133-run win against Bangladesh in 2024, which is currently the highest T20I win by runs for India.
When it comes to records, they are made to be broken, but India will be hoping that history is not repeated as the series is tied at 2-2. With the teams set to face off at the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru on Saturday, October 17, the ghosts of Hyderabad will either haunt the home team or give way for a championship-winning victory.
