As the countdown begins to the highly anticipated India-A New Zealand multi-format series that commences on October 22, 2026, the excitement is at its peak. The tour will feature a five-match T20I series, followed by five ODIs and two Test matches, with every match scheduled to begin at 12:30 PM IST, culminating on December 1.

Under the dynamic captaincy of Shreyas Iyer and vice-captaincy of Tilak Varma, the Indian team has announced a 16-member T20I squad, leaving many players in suspense about their inclusion in the squad. With a limited number of 11 players in a side and a star-studded line-up, it is evident that at least five players will miss every match for the team.

Here are three Indian players that may find themselves on the sidelines for the entire T20I series against New Zealand.

1. Prince Yadav: The Pace Squeeze

With 10 wickets from nine T20I appearances, Prince Yadav has shown that he can rise to the challenge of the international stage. He was part of the squad for the preceding series against the West Indies, playing in two games, bowling economically and picking a wicket.

But cricket is a game of timing and competition.

Yadav has little experience in the Caribbean, and with a 16-man squad full of battle-tested, in-form quicks, the pace bowler faces a difficult task to make a place in the balanced playing XI. Unless injuries or tactical changes open the door, Yadav may have to play second fiddle from the dugout.

2. Vaibhav Sooryavanshi: Searching for the Breakthrough

On paper, the young batting sensation Vaibhav Sooryavanshi has a stellar CV, with 246 runs in eight T20I appearances plus useful runs at the 2026 Asian Games for India.

But momentum is everything in modern cricket.

Sooryavanshi didn't see an appearance in a single match in the home stretch of the West Indies T20I series immediately preceding this tour. So with the staggering depth of India's batting arsenal, it will take nothing short of extraordinary efforts in the nets to convince the team management that he belongs in the top-order or middle-order against a disciplined New Zealand unit.

3. Nitish Kumar Reddy: Consistency Under the Microscope

As an explosive pace-bowling all-rounder, Nitish Kumar Reddy has the kind of balance every captain dreams of.

With 153 runs and 10 wickets in his nine T20I matches, Reddy's utility is unquestioned. Reddy played four games against the West Indies, but delivered impact performances in only one of those outings.

In elite sport, inconsistency is a luxury teams can ill afford when the competition for spots is at its peak. While his dual-skill set keeps him firmly in the selectors' wider plans, those patchy returns in the Caribbean, coupled with a fierce competition for all-rounders, could see Reddy relegated to a bench role as the team management goes for a winning formula right out of the gate.

The Road Ahead

For Iyer, Varma, and the team think-tank, having an embarrassment of riches is a welcome headache. But for players like Yadav, Sooryavanshi, and Reddy, the next few weeks will test their resilience behind the scenes, often in a battle against their own squad.
