Indian Premier League (IPL) scouts are on the constant lookout for potential talent in domestic leagues, international circuits, and franchise-specific tournaments. But what catches their attention most are the achievements of the relevant teams and individuals on the pitch, especially when they take place on the subcontinent or involve a showdown against the world's best batters and bowlers.
The IPL 2026 mini-auction is scheduled for December 2026, and West Indies' superstars and heroes have already made their mark in a challenging 202-series campaign in India. New Zealand has an excellent chance to capitalize on this by maximizing the utility of their upcoming series against the Men in Blue in 2027, and capitalizing on the recency bias of the IPL scouts.
The majority of New Zealand's squad is already familiar to the Indian audience. There are, however, a few promising young talents not yet showcased that could grab the IPL franchises' attention.
1. Bevon Jacobs
At 24, the T20 sensation is on the brink of cementing his status as one of the most destructive modern-day T20 finishers with 1,191 runs at a staggering strike rate of 147.40 in 46 innings.
Despite being signed by the Mumbai Indians at his base price of ₹30 Lakhs, he was released without making a single appearance. That decision could be coming back to haunt them. Jacobs announced his intentions immediately in Christchurch, smashing a ton of runs at the premier Indian pacer Arshdeep Singh on the first ball to hit a six as he launched his way to a punchy 31 off 16 balls before a disappointing run-out.
Jacobs has had a meteoric rise in the 2026 season with 560 runs at an average of 35.00 and a strike rate of 151.35.
His strike rate has improved, having crossed the 30-run mark thrice in his last four games after averaging a mere 16.80 in his first eight matches. For teams that need a middle-order punch, he is a high-risk but high-reward prospect.2. Nathan Smith
Despite his lack of T20I experience, Nathan Smith is a serious contender for the role of pace bowling all-rounder. Smith, a seam-bowling all-rounder, has had a T20 career of sorts in the last decade, with his domestic experience of 80 matches, picking up 82 wickets at an economy of 8.51.
In the recent fixture against India, Nathan Smith faced the daunting task of bowling at the death against some of the best hitters in the game. Smith bowled a crucial 16th over, conceding just seven runs before a nervy 14-run over saw him drop a catch at third man. The catch that went over the ropes, and Lockie Ferguson would have held if he was in the outfield, was a highlight of the match.
Smith brings a yorker and death bowling to the team, and his experience at the top domestic level makes him a good backup for franchises.
Smith has also been in great form with the bat, recording 20 fifties in his career across all formats, and is a handy utility player for most franchises.3.Michael Bracewell
Michael Bracewell, the spin all-rounder, is a familiar sight in the IPL, having played for the RCB as a replacement player. He played four matches for the RCB, scoring 58 runs at a strike rate of 123.40 and picking up six crucial wickets at an economy of 15.83 before being released.
Bracewell has a rich record in limited-overs cricket, with 586 runs and 103 wickets in 95 matches at an average of 36.32 and 30.57 respectively. He also led his side to the title in the European T20 Premier League as the leading wicket-taker in the competition.
Bracewell took a sensational 2/37 in the opening match against India, including the prized wickets of India's premier left-handers, Abhishek Sharma and Tilak Varma. His off-spin and finishing ability with the bat make him an attractive signing for most IPL franchises, and he has the experience and match-winning prowess to be a valuable addition to any team looking for a balanced all-rounder.
