Australia batter Travis Head has urged his teammates to work together and build stronger partnerships after the team struggled to score consistently in recent Test matches. Despite some impressive individual performances, Australia have suffered heavy defeats against Bangladesh and South Africa, showing that one player’s efforts are not always enough to win games.
Head scored 121 runs in the second innings against South Africa in Gqeberha, but Australia still lost by an innings and 31 runs. He said the team needs more players to contribute rather than depending on one batter to deliver.
"That's what does win you games, individual performances, but as a collective we need to be able to do it as well," Head said, praising Scott Boland 's fighting 40-run innings as an example of the support the team needs.
Australia need to rebuild their batting partnerships
Head explained that Australia have traditionally been good at building big partnerships, but that strength has been missing in recent months. He admitted that facing strong bowling attacks in difficult conditions has made things challenging, although the team continues to work hard to improve.
He also stressed the importance of handling pressure and knowing when to defend or attack. According to Head, poor decisions and a lack of clear plans can lead to batting collapses, especially when the opposition gains momentum.
"The game is all about momentum," Head said, explaining that players must find the right balance between absorbing pressure and fighting back.
Head backs Labuschagne despite pressure
Head also spoke about Marnus Labuschagne , who scored 64 in the second innings against South Africa before getting out after sharing a 92-run partnership with Head. He acknowledged that Labuschagne is under pressure but reminded everyone that even experienced players go through difficult periods.
" Test cricket is bloody hard, but we're in a performance-based game, so everyone feels the pressure," Head said, adding that even senior batter Steve Smith would feel pressure at times.
Head believes Australia must improve their collective batting, make better decisions and support one another if they want to return to winning ways in Test cricket.
