In the cut-throat world of T20 franchises, consistency is rarely found. However, the Mumbai Indians (MI) have created a dynasty that has won the Indian Premier League (IPL) five times by playing by one rule: loyalty and growth through the ranks.

They have always looked within and transformed their most iconic match winners on the Wankhede pitch into tacticians in the dugout.

As they create a new tactical approach for the IPL 2027, it is clear that the culture of having trusted leaders will be at the heart of the franchise. Here are four cricketing legends who have made the transition from being a player for the Mumbai Indians to a tactician in the dugout.

Mumbai Indians' Big Four: From Pitch to Pavilion

1. Kieron Pollard – The Ultimate Servant

Trinidadian powerhouse Kieron Pollard encapsulates everything that is great about the Mumbai Indians. Pollard joined Mumbai in 2010 and wore their famous blue and gold throughout his 13 seasons of IPL cricket.

On the field Pollard scored 3412 runs in 189 matches at a scorching strike rate of 147.32, hitting the ball out of the park 223 times. He also took 69 wickets with his handy medium pace.

He was an integral part of all 5 of MI's successes (2013, 2015, 2017, 2019 and 2020).

After retiring from playing in 2022, Pollard took the role of batting coach.

Pollard has now been promoted to Head Coach ahead of the 2027 season, making this the ultimate example of MI's growth from within culture.

“Pollard wasn't just a player for Mumbai Indians he helped shape what the team was.”

2. Shaun Pollock – The Foundation

Shaun Pollock was only at Mumbai for a short amount of time but had a huge impact when they were starting out in 2008.

Pollock captained the side during some key moments in their first season. In 13 games, he took 11 wickets whilst keeping his economy to a stellar 6.54.

He retired at the end of 2008 and was appointed Head Coach for the 2009 season. His structure and tactical approach helped turn them from a team that was struggling early on into consistent contenders.

3. Lasith Malinga – Death Bowler Extraordinaire

Lasith Malinga is one of the best T20 bowlers ever to play the game thanks to his trademark round-arm action and unbreakable yorkers.

Malinga took 170 wickets in 122 games between 2009 and 2019. He finished his playing career on a high with some nerves of steel to deliver the last ball of the 2019 final and win by a single run against Chennai Super Kings.

Malinga got his first taste of coaching in 2018 when he became the bowling coach for MI. He then became the full-time bowling coach and shared his world-class death bowling skills and composure.

4. Parthiv Patel – The Scouter

Parthiv Patel brought a lot of consistency to the top of the order during one of the most successful periods for the franchise.

Whilst he had a long career in the IPL scoring 2848 runs he hit his stride between 2015 and 2017. He played a key role in two title wins and scored 395 runs at the top of the order during 2017.

After retiring in 2020, he became part of Mumbai's scouting department. His eye for talent and knowledge quickly turned him into a specialist coach at MI. He helped identify and develop some exciting young talent from within.

Conclusion

Whilst in modern franchises, teams are often judged on how quickly they can sign quality talent, the consistent success from Mumbai shows that they have truly succeeded by having a consistent culture. They have ensured that all of their new signings learn the Wankhede way from the legends of the club by putting all of their previous winners in charge of their plans.
