After playing for Chhattisgarh for one season, Aditya Sarwate is making his presence felt in every game on deciding to return to Kerala this time. The left-arm spinner’s wicket-to-wicket bowling gave the hosts early advantage as Bengal were reduced to 172/6 on a rain-curtailed opening day of their Ranji Trophy Elite Group ‘C’ match at the KCA Stadium, Mangalapuram, Kerala, on Monday.

Bengal could have been in further trouble had not Sudip Kumar Gharami and Shahbaz Ahmed stitched together a 62-run sixth-wicket stand late in the day.

Kerala captain Vishnu Vinood had little hesitation in putting the rivals in on winning the toss after the whole first session of play was washed out.
Bengal lost their skipper Abhimanyu Easwaran ealy when the opener edged MD Nidheesh to wicketkeeper Mohammed Azharuddin in the fifth over of the day.

However, Ankur Paul stood tall playing some fluent strokes to complete his 50 off 64 balls. But Bengal lost Aamir Gani, promoted up the order at No. 3, just after the first drinks break being caught by Abhishek Nair off Basil N.

Sarwate struck hard getting out-of-form Sudip Chatterjee and Avishek Porel in the same over to reduce Bengal to 108/5.
While Chatterjee perished for 6 edging one to Sachin Baby in the slips, Porel fell for a golden duck playing one straight to the bowler. Bengal suddenly found them at 108/5 from 102/2.

The hosts came back into the match late when Gharami (36) was caught by Abhishek Nair off pacer Basil N at the penultimate over of the day. Only 50 overs of play were possible on the day after the umpires called for stumps due to bad light.
